Inception of Project Laadli

Runaya is one of the companies in the manufacturing to achieve >50% women employees and aim to achieve >50% women across its workforce, including contract employees. Runaya’s vision towards “Build Future Positive” is only possible when there are equal opportunities to all genders, and we are aiming to reach there, thus contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals of the world.

Achieving these goals involve working on two areas,
1) Providing Equal Opportunities,

2) Women Empowerment through addressing the grass root issues that hinder women from achieving their dreams. While our People, Social & Equal Opportunity policies are pivotal in providing equal opportunities to women, we needed more vigour and focus to address the Women Empowerment.

Thus, Runaya embarked on the journey of Project Laadli through our CSR Initiatives, to address the key challenges that stem women completing the education and joining the work force. Through our CSR Approach, we are aiming to boost women empowerment in the local communities and help the company’s objectives in achieving Gender Diversity, better Employee Retention Rates, and geographic diversity, especially in the backward and tribal regions of Odisha, near our Jharsuguda Operations

Challenges in Odisha for
Women Empowerment:

Despite being the 11th largest state in India, more than 80% of the population of Odisha still lives in Rural Areas. Given that, women empowerment is quite challenging, especially when the drop out rates in schools are very high in the adolescent years among girl children. The challenges arise from basic sanitation requirements like menstrual hygiene and other health related issues like Anaemia. Jharsuguda, despite being industrialized district, is facing many challenges in the nearby villages to bring girl children to school and the dropout rates are high. To address these challenges, Runaya aimed to create awareness among the nearby communities regarding the importance of educational and social development, especially of adolescent girls. Thus, ‘Project Laadli’ was launched in Jharsuguda as a CSR initiative of Runaya Refining.

Project Laadli,
House Hold Survey & Objectives:

Project Laadli, initiated in 2022, aims for the development and brighter future of the adolescent girls. Runaya envisages empowering them through education and health initiatives and thus contributing to the growth of girl children in the society.

Runaya, with the help of Prayatn Sanstha, conducted a household survey in the nearby 10 villages under panchayats of Dalki and Katikela of Jharsuguda District in 2022, to understand the baseline of women empowerment. Following the survey, we identified the following recommendations to improve the awareness and reduce the dropouts among the adolescent girls.

Strengthening of public health and nutrition services like Anganwadis and public health centers/sub-centers by enhancing their connect with the community

Efforts for improving educational status of adolescent girls should focus upon

Developing community awareness on importance of continuing education of girls beyond elementary level

Ensuring child and adolescent friendly teaching learning environment in government schools through capacity building and sensitization of teachers, strengthening of school management committees and developing modern and child/adolescent friendly infrastructure in remote schools

Runaya & Circularity in Low Carbon Aluminium Value Chain

The world produces ~65 million tons of Aluminium per annum, which results in more than 1 million ton of Aluminium dross being produced every year out of which more than 100k is produced in India. The environmental impact of this hazardous waste is a global problem that needs to be addressed on priority. Runaya addresses one of the biggest challenges facing the aluminium industry, relating to handling, evacuation, and processing of dross in an environmentally friendly manner with zero waste and zero discharge.

Ever since the inception, Runaya has based its operations on three pillars- Sustainability, Innovation and Resources. Leveraging our core strategy, Runaya has partnered with Vedanta Resources Ltd to manage waste from the largest Aluminium Smelter plant in Asia. With the proprietary technology, licensed from TAHA, Runaya has recycled almost 21500 Tons of Aluminium Dross at Jharsuguda in FY2022. Runaya is poised to reach 36000 Tons of Aluminium Dross Processing per year by FY2023, through its Operations at Jharsuguda and Korba locations of Vedanta Aluminium and Bharat Aluminium. By FY2025, Runaya is aspiring to build the capacity to process 60000 Tons of Aluminium Dross per year.

Runaya’s Aluminium recovery from dross include the key steps of Hot Dross Processing and Cold Dross Processing. Runaya recovers ~40% of dross as Aluminium through above processes and the other ~60% of the dross is processed into Briquettes. These briquettes are sold to the steel industries as Steel Slag Conditioner. In FY22, of the 21500 tons of dross processed, we have recovered 7515 tons of Aluminium and produced saleable product from remaining 14000 tons of depleted dross.

Runaya’s dross recovery process promoted circularity in the Aluminium industry through recycling 7515 tons of Aluminium in FY22. By FY25, Runaya will be adding capabilities to recover 25000 tons of aluminium every year and thus contributing significantly to the low carbon aluminium value chain.

The Aluminium recovery through the current process is one of the most carbon efficient Aluminium produced in the world, with only 655 kgs of CO2 per ton of Aluminium produced (Based on DNV Certification for Restora Ultra, for Q4FY22), compared to 15600 kg of CO2 per ton of Aluminium produced through traditional route (Based on Integrated Report of Vedanta Resources of FY22). In FY22, through this recovery, Runaya was able to avoid more than 112000 tons of CO2 Emission per ton of Aluminium recovered. Due to its lower Carbon footprint, our partner Vedanta was able to brand the recovered Aluminium under Restora Ultra, thus contributing to the low carbon aluminium value chain (https://vedantaaluminium.com/products/restora-low-carbon-aluminium/). FY25, Runaya’s Aluminium Recovery will avoid ~375000 tCO2 emitting to atmosphere.
